Weipa is a major mining town on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Reaching it from Cannon Hill requires a flight to Cairns and a connecting flight to Weipa, or a challenging 4WD journey up the Cape York Peninsula. The road route is only recommended for experienced drivers with high-clearance 4WD vehicles. Most visitors choose to fly to ensure safety and save time. The town is famous for its bauxite mining and excellent fishing.
