To reach Launceston from Wangaratta, you must drive to Melbourne and board the Spirit of Tasmania ferry to Devonport. The drive to Station Pier in Port Melbourne takes approximately 3 hours. The ferry crossing across the Bass Strait takes between 9 and 11 hours. From Devonport, it is a 100-kilometer drive to Launceston via the Bass Highway. This is the only practical way to transport a personal vehicle to Tasmania.
