The journey from Berry Springs to Nhulunbuy is a remote travel experience. The most practical way to reach this isolated town in Arnhem Land is to drive to Darwin International Airport and take a flight to Gove Airport (Nhulunbuy). The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Driving is extremely difficult and requires a 4WD vehicle, extensive preparation, and permits to enter Aboriginal land. Flying is the recommended mode of transport.
Total Distance: 700 km straight-line air distance; road distance is significantly longer and requires 4WD.
You must have a permit to enter Arnhem Land, even if you are just visiting Nhulunbuy.
May to September, when the weather is dry and the roads are more accessible.
